There is no doubt about it: vanity tops are a signature element for most bathrooms. It doesn't matter if you have a deluxe marble shower or an equally amazing freestanding bathtub, if your vanity is average it can detract from the rest of your master bathroom configuration and decline its value. That is why it pays off to invest in having your vanity as high-quality as possible, and many homeowners do so by selecting one of the best and most iconic material there is in the natural stone market: marble.

Before and After Picture of a Marble Stone Polishing Service in Chicago
Our client, a Chicago native, knew she wanted to make her master bathroom stand out and look as elegant and classy as possible. To achieve this, she chose a beautiful slab of marble to make for a beautiful vanity top. However, this was a few years ago, and given the lack of maintenance, this marble vanity was not looking as splendid as it used to. Knowing there had to be a Chicago stone polishing company capable of restoring the stone to its prime, she went on internet to search.

It didn't take long for her to find information on good hard surface restoration contractors in her area, but she wanted the best. After carefully going through a slew of marble restoration job reviews, she found Sir Grout Chicago. She was impressed by our many before-and-after pictures of restored vanities, and signed up for a free in-home evaluation.

On the appointed day, our team arrived at our client's residence to assess the vanity top's damage and offer the best possible options to restore it. As our client took the experts to the bathroom, she mentioned she had had the vanity installed two years ago, but she had never had the time to schedule a maintenance for it. The lack of proper care showed, as the experts immediately noticed many etches, scratches, and the presence of hard water deposits that appeared as white spots over the stone. Thankfully, these were nothing a good stone polishing service couldn't fix. Putting her trust in the team's expertise, the client agreed and set up another appointment for the job.

Despite how ubiquitous marble can seem in most high-end construction and interior decoration, this is not a stone that can go for prolonged periods without maintenance and sealing as other stones like granite and quartz. Yes, marble is resistant, but it is quite porous, which means it can be easily stained, and etched if it comes into contact with any type of acidic substances, including some common bathroom cleaning products. If not taken care of, marble's great looks can be ruined and your investment can be lost.

But our client's investment was not lost yet. On the morning scheduled for the job, our team of expert techs arrived to tackle the task of bringing this beautiful vanity top back to life. They started by spraying a marble-appropriate cleaner all over the vanity's surface, letting it sit to stir up all mineral deposits and equally resistant dirt, then rinsed it with a high-speed scrubber until the stone was completely clear of any kind of residue.

Once the cleaning was done, it was time to reverse the damage of the etch marks and scratches. Using low grit diamond pads, our crew ground the affected areas until the stone was smooth and clear again; then they buffed it up to a glossy finish. At last, they used a deep-penetrating sealant to seal the porous stone and prevent staining.

When our crew was done, they brought our client to look at the results. It took her a minute to react. Her marble looked as good as when she had picked it out at the store. She thanked the techs and promised to quickly set up another maintenance session within the year to keep her marble looking lush.

Before leaving, our team left her a few simple tips to care for her marble until the next maintenance time. First, check the cleaner's label and stay away from products with acidic components; it's better to buy products specifically designed for marble as these usually have a more balanced pH. Second, try to avoid spilling tinted liquids such as nail polish or hair dye on marble, especially if it isn't sealed, as the stone will quickly absorb the tint and become stained. Third, never miss a maintenance and sealing session.
